Outdoor Art: The Best Foot Paint Ever

My favorite projects in the whole world are those that send kids outdoors, armed with color and imagination and energy. There is no better place to make art!  Outside is a mess-forgiving place that absorbs the drips and spills of budding Van Goghs of all ages and allows their imaginations full rein.

This paint takes an extra step to make, but it feels positively luscious between the toes (or use as a finger paint) and I promise is worth the effort!

What you will need:
1/2 cup dry laundry starch (available in the laundry section of most grocery stores, or you can substitute liquid laundry starch
1/2 cup mild detergent soap flakes (grate a bar of Ivory soap if soap flakes aren’t available)
2 cups cold water
1 tablespoon dry or liquid tempera paint
long piece of butcher paper (ask the people in the meat department of your grocer for a piece)

Stir the starch and the cold water together. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture is thick and glossy (liquid starch will not thicken much). Remove from the heat and whisk in the soap flakes and paint. When the paint is cool, it is ready to use!

Tape the butcher paper glossy side up onto the sidewalk or driveway. Place the paint in large pans (9 x 13 works great) and set the pans near the paper. Take off your shoes and either sponge the paint to the soles of your feet, or step into the paint and onto the paper.
